He let out a sigh. He didn’t do this to indulge his hopes. For him, being a hunter was about protecting those who needed help, and given her circumstances, Brenna did. He only hoped she wouldn’t blame him for the sins of his father.

“What can I do?” he asked. Watching already turned him restless.

“Think one happy thought,” she muttered while rearranging certain crystals. After opening the satchel, she sprinkled lavender and thyme across the setup.

He rolled his eyes. “Thanks, Peter Pan.”

“Bear with me. We’re almost there. You can join in on the incantations if you want. I could use some mood music.” She cracked a half grin. Even in her state of upset, she maintained her professionalism, turning off her worries to concentrate on what needed to be done.

After five or so minutes of more of rustling around and making final marks on the ground, Jev stood and dusted off her knees.

“All right, time to begin this business. I’m going to start the incantation, but banishing is much easier work than summoning. The problem with summoning is that you can drag the occasional beastie with you. Here’s where you’re going to come in. If anything unsavory travels through the Way with her, I need you at the ready with that pretty little gun of yours.”

He saluted. “Yes, ma’am.”

An honest grin lit Jev’s face, as if she was excited about the dangerous stunt they planned. “Well then, let’s get started.”
